I stumbled across a Gary Vee Facebook Reel and I felt completely attacked – but in a way that opened my eyes.

While Gary Vaynerchuck typically talks about business and entrepreneurship, there are so many things that he says that can also be related to Bariatric Surgery and other aspects of our everyday lives.

Quit Aiming for Perfection!

Gary Vaynerchuk was recently quoted as saying “Perfection is the enemy of progress.” This quote couldn’t be more true, especially when it comes to our health and well-being.

So many people strive for perfection in their appearance, but this is a never-ending battle that can actually have negative consequences on our mental, emotional, and physical health. It’s time to stop aiming for perfection and start aiming for healthy instead!

Bariatric surgery is no different. So many people are so stressed about what everyone thinks about their body, what they are eating, how they look, etc.

So why is perfectionism so harmful?

One of the main reasons is that it’s simply unattainable. No one is perfect, no matter how hard they try. This constant striving for something that’s impossible to achieve can be incredibly frustrating and demoralizing. It’s important to remember that everyone has imperfections, and that’s what makes us unique and interesting!

One of the negative consequences of striving for perfection is that it can be incredibly stressful. When you’re constantly worrying about whether or not you meet society’s standards of perfection, it takes a toll on your mental and emotional health. According to the American Psychological Association, 46% of Americans reported feeling more anxious in 2019 than they did in 2014 when APA first asked the question.

The Pressure to Be Perfect

It seems like from the time we’re born, we’re bombarded with messages about how we’re supposed to look and behave. We’re told that we need to be thin and beautiful, wear the latest fashions, have perfect skin, and so on.

What if we don’t measure up? Well, then we’re not good enough. This pressure to be perfect is compounded by the fact that social media gives us a never-ending stream of images of “perfect” people living “perfect” lives. It’s no wonder that so many of us feel like we can’t measure up!

I think it’s important to differentiate between aiming for excellence vs perfectionism. Excellence is a worthy goal – it’s what we should strive for in our lives. But perfectionism is an unattainable ideal that can only lead to frustration and disappointment. We need to learn to accept ourselves for who we are and strive for excellence, not perfection.

The Consequences of Striving for Perfection

You know, I’ve always tried to be a perfectionist. I always strive to be the best, no matter what I’m doing. And I used to think that was a good thing. I mean, aiming to be perfect is a worthy goal, right? But lately, I’ve been wondering if my quest for perfection is actually more harmful than helpful.

Not only is the pressure to be perfect stressful, but it can also lead to dangerous behaviors such as disordered eating. When people are so focused on achieving an unrealistic standard of beauty, they may resort to unhealthy habits like crash dieting, over-exercising, or purging in order to lose weight. These behaviors can quickly spiral out of control and lead to life-threatening conditions such as anorexia or bulimia.

So maybe it’s time to reassess your goals. Maybe aiming for excellence is a better goal than striving for perfection. Because at the end of the day, you want to be healthy – both mentally and physically. And I am sure you don’t think perfection is worth sacrificing your health for.

Aiming for Perfection is Expensive

Another negative consequence of striving for perfection is that it can be expensive. Whether you’re spending money on cosmetics, clothes, fitness classes, or plastic surgery, trying to meet society’s standards of perfection can quickly drain your bank account.

And let’s not forget all the time you’ll spend comparison shopping or scrolling through social media comparing yourself to others. The pressure to be perfect is not only costly in terms of money but also in terms of time.

It’s Time to Stop Aiming for Perfection!

It seems like everywhere we look, we’re bombarded with images of perfect bodies and perfect lives. It’s easy to start comparing ourselves to these unrealistic standards and thinking that we’ll never measure up. But what we need to remember is that perfection is an unattainable goal. aiming for perfection is not only unrealistic, but it can also be detrimental to our mental and physical health.
