The way we think about mental health is shifting. When my youngest son was only about 1 or 2 years old, his birth father and I started parting ways. There was a lot of verbal abuse on both sides; he also cheated, which led to even more stress for me at work since I had just started a new job opportunity just six months prior!

When I was supposed to watch him perform at a gig, he made every excuse in the book for me not to. It hitme likning – I flipped. I knew at that moment, that either he wasn’t really at a gig or the girl he was cheating on me with was there. I couldn’t handle it anymore, and it was the last straw.

The feeling of dropping my boys off at their mom’s house, kissing them, and the look into their eyes is one I’ll never forget. I looked atI’llmom and said, “Make sure you always tell the boys, that I love them, and I didn’t do it because of them. I did it because I couldn’t be the best mommy they deserved.” She tried stopping me but couldn’t.

I had a severe mental breakdown on the pier, turned my phone off, and just sat there in silence for several hours. The waves were high as they made their way toward me with rough waters that promised death if I jumped into them right then – but what stopped me?

I have never been more unhappy in my life than when I was with this person. Every day, they made it seem like everything is fine and that there were no problems between us at all which turned out to be far from the truth; not only did most people not see any signs of what may happen but also some friends even went against their intuition for me because instead choosing sides either way (even though we’re still together).
